ideas/tips for condtioning/retraining (more info)?
ok so i'll be going out to see a 5 year old ottb off the track since late nov. '08.
the owner has a small racing stable and the owners neighbor ("selling agent") retrains them to sell once they've retired from the race track.
im looking for a new horse and saw him then emailed her and she thinks we would be a good match (he likes jumping, i do eventing, ive sort of retrained and ottb mare (it was me and another girl) but i have ridden them before....) ive also ridden young horses from 5-6 years.
he has a solid W/T/C and is going 2 ft. 6 in. courses with 3 ft. singles...
i was wondering if any body just had a few extra helpful tips 
*im not doing this alone, i do have a trainer!!!*
i forgot to add im DEFFF. not a beginner rider. ive ridden many types of horses for 5 years.
(run-offs, lazy, bucking, kicking, biting, sensitive, "dead"...)
It sounds like you know what you're doing. Go out, try him out, take him on a 2-week trial if possible to see if you're really a good match.
Personally, I would lay off the jumping for a few months, and get some really, really solid basics on him. W/T/C is not the only basics he should have. He should be moving off leg easily, have a supple mouth, a light side, and he should be hacked out on the roads/trails to build more muscle and stamina. Once he's going extremely well on the flat and has some trail riding experience, I would move up to jumps.
I would also do a lot of stretching and lunging prior to riding. Some OTTBs can get very stiff when they go from very regular workouts on the track to a new career which isn't as fast-paced or as intense as racing.
